The island's history

HISTORY, CULTURE AND TRADITION

Tavolara Island is located in the Gulf of Olbia, near the town of Porto San Paolo.

Its beauty, its emerald sea and green vegetation give the island a charm that attracts hundreds of tourists from all over the world to admire its beauty.

One of the island's features is the so-called "Spalmatore di terra" (land spreader), a thin isthmus that slowly disappears into the sea bed. Since medieval times, the rulers of the island have been members of the Bertoleoni family, who still live on "their" island, as is tradition.

The birth of the Kingdom of Tavolara

In the late 1700s, Giuseppe Bartoleoni discovered the uninhabited island of Tavolara by chance and decided to build a house there. From then on, the royal family never left the island. The Bartoleoni, although the only permanent residents on Tavolara Island, did not easily obtain sovereignty over the territory, though it was granted after numerous appeals and insistence, even before the King of Sardinia.

The current owner of Ristorante Da Tonino Re di Tavolara is a direct descendant of the royal sovereigns and thus shows his history in an old family photo displayed inside the restaurant.

Tavolara today

Both the natural beauty of the area and the legendary history of the Bartoleoni family give the island a magical and romantic atmosphere.

Don't miss the sight of the colours of the sea and the austere rocks on the cliffs, walks on the white sand along the isthmus that slowly disappears, or a visit to the small cemetery where the tombstones of the first king of Tavolara and his descendants stand, to relive their history step by step.
